PART ONE “Audition” with no costumes
Stage Manager: ( Stage Manager with clip board in hand storms on the stage in front of the closed curtain and says loudly to the audience) Quiet Please… Everyone quiet down… …Final Auditions for Broadway at Paramount will begin shortly. We only have room for two dancers to complete our cast. Please turn off all cell phones and pagers. And no photography! Although do remember that my RIGHT SIDE is the best (Stage Manager strikes a pose). Remember as the Stage Manager I do accept donations and have influence with the producer if you really want that role in the show.

SPECIAL EFFECTS: CURTAIN OPENS
CURTAIN OPENS
(There is utter chaos on the stage with dancers twirling, set design, makeup, singers warming up etc. The Director is standing and watching stage left)
Stage Manager: ( Stage Manager with clip board in hand motions to the dancers enters stage right) Dancers, I want Boys here and girls here. Singers who can dance here. Dancers who can sing there. Actors who think they can dance and sing in the back. Come on now we don’t have all day. We have room for one boy and one girl only.

( Stage Manager looks at the group, moves people around and says)
Stage Manager: OK after your auditions give your number and resume to the Director over there …
Dancer: Excuse me, my name is Hailey, I really need this job….
Stage Manager: We don’t do names. We don’t remember names, just numbers and resumes. (he turns and looks at the control booth and yells) OK we are ready to begin now. CUE THE MUSIC !

Director: That was good but I am looking for two dancers right now. You two over there. (motions towards Eduardo and Cristina one couple raises their hands and another couple pushes forward only to be rejected by the Director). I need a couple for our opening dance number. Something that screams “On Broadway”. See what you can do with this music.

(after Eduardo and Cristina finish On Broadway, chaos begins again with workers, dancers, makeup etc. Some of the dancers remain on stage stretching on stage right and left)

(then an accountant appears on small stage left looking for the producer and yells; lights focus on the actors)
Accountant:

LaFong…I am looking for the Producer,
Mr. Carl LaFong
Stage Manager: Excuse me sir. Whom are you looking for again ?
Accountant: Mr. Carl La Fong. Are you Mr. La Fong ? Capital L small a Capital F small o small n small g. Carl La Fong. Do you know him sir ? (gestures to the stage manager with his hands)
Stage Manager: Carl La Fong. Capital L small a Capital F small o small n small g. No and if I did, I wouldn’t admit it.
Accountant: Well thank you for your time then. I really must find Mr. LaFong. He owes lots of money to the Paramount for rental of the theatre. (He starts to turn away then stops as the Stage manager says )
Stage Manager: Oh Mr. LaFong ( he waves to the producer )
( the accountant turns and fumbles and chases after Carl LaFong)
Director: (Stands up). OK peoples let’s get started come down stage and let’s go through your number. Lower that backdrop !

(lights go bright as the BROADWAY backdrop is lowered into position)

Stage Manager: Mr. Director, the accountant from the Paramount Theatre was here to see Mr. LaFong about some bill.
Director: Not now, can’t you see we are rehearsing !!! Besides Mr. LaFong lost the key to the safe where the money is stored.
Stage Manager: But Mr. Director. Can’t we just get a copy made?
Director: No No No. It is one of a kind (Stands up and claps his hands). Enough about the key and the money. That’s Mr. LaFong’s problem. Let’s get started with Dress Rehearsals ! We are running out of time. Where is that master of ceremonies? Well we can’t wait. Let’s begin with our opening number. “King of New York” from Step of Class.

Director: Well done. Go ahead and change for your next number.
Stage Manager: But Mr. Director the show is tonight !!! And if we don’t pay the accountant …well NO FEE….. NO SHOW !!!
Director: Nonsense my good man. Mr. LaFong will deliver. Just ask any of the chorus girls. He always delivers !!!
One of the dancers smiles and makes a funny gesture with a thumbs up. (then the Director starts ordering people around with the Stage Manager preparing for the next act)
Director: OK let’s get ready for the next act. By the way, where is our master of ceremonies? He needs to practice his introductions. I don’t have time to do his job too. ( the Director starts to look off Stage for the MC)
(the
accountant appears on stage left and chases
Carl LaFong)
Accountant: Mr. La Fong oh Mr. LaFong…I am the Paramount’s accountant. Please wait ! I will be right there…STOP !!!!
(You see the Producer Carl LaFong quickly leave the stage as the accountant walks on with his papers and briefcase. He is stopped by the stage manager allowing Carl to escape)
Stage Manager: Accounting mmmmm. That’s an interesting and noble profession. Did you know sir that the very word accounting is derived from the word COUNT. Yes Sir, you are not an accountant but rather a COUNT. A man of nobility. You should be proud. Now go forth and account for yourself.
Accountant: (at first feels good and begins to walk away and then turns then becomes confused and says) Thank you sir but I really need to speak with Mr. La Fong, please I just need to go over the figures and unpaid bills.
Stage Manager: Figures ! Well that’s all you had to ask for. Inga...Inga !!!!!!
SOUND: INGA MUSIC (track 4)
(Inga walks in with her mimicing understudy to her special music INGA MUSIC; she walks from upstage left to the center and cuddles up to the Director; the understudy pushes the Stage Manager aside)
Director: Inga please, please not now. Show the Accountant here all the figures he needs. And who is that young girl with you?
Stage Manager: that’s Inga’s Understudy !
Inga: responds in “foreign language” (Inga whispers into the accountant’s ear)
Accountant: But sir,. She doesn’t even speak English
Stage Manager: I know I know but who cares (Inga drags off the accountant with the understudy pushing him from behind) Now where were we?

Director: Well done with Inga. You are a man of many talents. Where is that master of ceremonies? Oh well I guess I have to do everything. Please welcome “ Damn Yankees” from Robins Dance Academy. No wait a minute I really hate the Yankees. Let’s have them perform Footloose instead.

Stage Manager: No it’s now ! The show is later tonight !!!!. Anyway let’s have you run through your lines oh little star. Start here (points to the script. MC makes his introduction on main stage right)

set up the next act while our little star here gets ready. (chorus girl brings

Charles and Melissa Zwerling are the producers of tonight’s show and have
organized a special scholarship and grant program from the Heritage Dance
Foundation. The winners of these $500 scholarships were
determined by their talent, scholastic achievements and
participation in community based activities. In addition, The Heritage Dance
Foundation is giving $500 artistic grants to each of the studios who have
participated in tonight’s show. Melissa if you would please hand out the
educational
scholarship awards and artistic grant awards to the
participating studios as I announce the winners.

Stage Manager: Come on people, clear the stage. We need to finish this dress rehearsal quickly. Come on now…clean the stage, move that scenery. Lift the backdrop
SPECIAL EFFECTS: Broadway Backdrop UP; Street Light and Vanity Prop positioned; start FOG Machine
(the dancers and performers move off stage talking while some stage hands move props: street light and mirror into place. The backdrop is lifted exposing black drapes. Lightening is dimmed and slowly focused on old woman sweeping. As vocals begin a separate spotlight focuses on stage right on singer. As the dancers begin the lightening increases slowly. At the end the spotlight focuses on the single rose as woman becomes old again and kneels. STREET LIGHT is turned off when Chip gets cape)

turns to Stage
Manager who climbs back up the stairs to main stage)
You can get more from an actor with respect, consideration, a kind word and ….a……gun. Here take the gun
(The Director accidentally releases the clip which falls to floor. He realizes that there are no bullets in the clip)
Darn, we need to find some bullets !!!
(
they walk off the stage together. Off stage we hear them
arguing on how to load the gun. There is a loud BANG. Then the Director peeks
out from behind the curtain)
SPECIAL EFFECTS: Shoot blank gun off stage
Director:
Never mind. It’s just a flesh wound. please

Director: Never never, the show must go on. Just keep that accountant away from me and especially from Mr. LaFong
(the accountant has sneaked up behind the Director and then taps him on the shoulder)
Director: Oh, Mr. Accountant. You just missed our producer, Mr. LaFong. He has been looking for you everywhere. He left me this check for you.
(the Accountant stretches the rubber check)
Accountant: I am sorry but tell Mr. LaFong but I must have cash. David Weil warned me about Mr. LaFong’s checks.
Director: Not a problem….INGA ...INGA !!!!!
SOUND: INGA MUSIC (track 6)
Inga: (walks in to her INGA MUSIC with understudy and puts her arm on the Accountant)
Director: Inga please bring the accountant to Mr. LaFong right away (he winks at Inga who winks back as they walk off the stage)
(Inga snaps her fingers as she motions to the accountant and has him follow her off the stage with understudy pushing from behind)

Producer: ( holds head and shakes) I just can’t remember what I did with that key. I should have left a note !!!
Stage Manager: Oh no you’re wife is here. You better tell her the problem about the money and the show !!! Remember you were going to give her the “ Starring Role”
Missy: ( walks up to the Producer) Hello Carl, well I ‘m ready for my big part in the show. Where is my Director?
Producer: (fumbles a bit) Well my dear we have a small problem. I can’t remember where I hid the key to the safe. No key no money no show and no star. ( as he points to her & holds his head and shakes)
Accountant: (walks in with Security (Andrew, Jamar, and Michael in black shirts) and the Director) Alright Mr. LaFong. Time is up. Unless I get the rehearsal fees, we are locking the doors on you.
Missy: Excuse me sir (pushes the accountant aside). Mr. Director, I am ready to do my lines now. Oh by the way Carl here is your stupid note (she pulls note from her breasts)
Producer: Yes Yes the note Thank you !!! (as Accountant pulls note aways) NO don’t read that note !!!!
Accountant: (pulls note from the Producer and reads out loud ”Remind me to tell that accountant that his place is in the office and not in the arts” Well this note is utter nonsense. (he turns the note over and reads)
What does D120 suppose to mean ???!!!
Missy: Carl, come with me…. ( Missy and Carl walk off the stage to chair D120 and finds key to the safe Missy and Carl walk back on to the stage with the key)
(Missy hands the key to Carl who hands it to the Director who hands it to the Stage Manager who hands it to the Accountant who walks back with Security and unlocks the safe and brings the three bags of money to the front. At this point Carl and Staff go and get the confetti canons)
Accountant: Mmmmmm we have a small problem here. There is too much money here; the rehearsal fee is only $100
Director: Well, the theatre is paid for, we have already given out the scholarship money tonight. Tell you what, Let’s give the money back to the people …
